creative copywriter / copy editor

location: Fort Wayne, Indiana

The successful candidate must be passionate about writing and brand storytelling in various forms, including print and digital. Our ideal candidate would be a writer, editor, and creative strategist all in one. Must be adept at creative writing and have experience working closely with creative directors and art directors to transform compelling and imaginative concepts into successful and effective brand stories. Must have the ability to write in a variety of voices and styles for an array of brands and audiences, with a strong focus on lifestyle and fashion/home areas of consumer marketing. 

essential duties and responsibilities

  • Work with creative counterparts on concepts and copy, with versatility for a variety of clients across all media (print, direct mail, digital, and social)
  • Think strategically, generating breakthrough ideas and showing an understanding of client marketing needs and consumer attitudes
  • Work on several assignments simultaneously under pressure to meet tight deadlines; manage workflow efficiently and take responsibility for timing and delivery
  • Demonstrate strong verbal skills in a professional, comprehensive, and inspiring manner; make presentations to internal team and clients
  • Edit and proof copy for accuracy, grammar, and punctuation; review final copy for preproduction
  • Adhere to client-specific brand standards and/or AP style
  • Observe established BMDG best-practices guidelines to ensure that copy and proofing on projects are managed correctly with internal staff
  • Adhere to consistent proofreaders’ marks
  • Maintain personal organizational tools, including calendar, contact information, and filing systems
  • Maintain a personal copy library for company reference and archiving
  • Track daily hours for each project for billing accuracy
  • Perform other duties as assigned

education and experience requirements

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field required
  • 5+ years’ experience with an advertising agency (or in a related field)
  • Experience as a copywriter or copy editor is required
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment

  • The understanding that content must be enriching, meaningful, and useful to the consumer—should have a way with words and understand the power of a good story
  • Excellent creative headline-writing skills and a strong ability to produce copy utilizing sophisticated wordplay
  • A meticulous writer with an eagle eye for editing and proofing
  • Strong interpersonal skills; must be a team player and a positive and innovative thinker; must work well with creative and core team members to achieve client satisfaction
  • A high level of initiative, with exceptional skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, identify and address problems, meet deadlines, and stay within budget
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment to support the agency’s creative goals and our clients’ business objectives
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and intermediate knowledge of Excel on a Mac OSX platform
  • Ability to work directly in InDesign creative files, PowerPoint, and Keynote is a plus
  • Capability to understand and utilize a variety of agency resources, software, and server protocols
